The Harsanyi Solution to the Bargaining Problem

چکیده

In the present chapter we introduce several generalizations to the formulation and solution of the bargaining problem. Until the early 1960s, the study of social power (including political power) had been carried out exclusively by social scholars. That changed in 1962, when Harsanyi managed to introduce the rigor of mathematical reasoning into the theory of social power. He achieved this by applying the analytical tools and models of game theory. In addition to certain significant contributions, Harsanyi provided a clear interpretation which eliminated much of the ambiguity that had plagued the theory of social power prior to the publication of Harsanyi’s works on the subject (Harsanyi 1962a, 1962b). Chapter 2 focused on Nash’s two-person bargaining problem which treats the bargaining parties’ conflict payoffs as given. This formulation suffers from two important drawbacks in the context of political policy formation. First, in many real world cases, the threats can actually be decided by the parties themselves. Nash himself recognized this and in a 1953 paper presented a model in which the determination of the threat payoff is the reflection of the parties’ strategic choices. In Section 3.2 we describe this more general model. Second, Nash’s original formulation of the bargaining problem dealt exclusively with the two-person bargaining problem. However, more often than not, the number of bargaining

Axiomatic approaches to coalitional bargaining

The simplest bargaining situation is that of two persons who have to agree on the choice of an outcome from a given set offeasible outcomes; in case no agreement is reached, a specified disagreement outcome results. This two-personpure bargaining problem has been extensively analyzed, starting with Nash (1950). When there are more than two participants, the n-person straightforward generalizati...

Axiomatic characterization of solutions for cooperative games has a long history, but until recently only solutions for cooperative games with transferable utility and bargaining problems

The egalitarian solutions for general cooperative games which were defined and axiomatized by Kalai and Samet, are compared to the Harsanyi solution. It is shown that axioms used by Hart to characterize the Harsanyi solution can be used to characterize the (symmetric) egalitarian solution. The only changes needed are the omission of the scale covariance axiom and the inclusion, in the domain of...

Vehicle Routing Problem in Competitive Environment: Two-Person Nonzero Sum Game Approach

Vehicle routing problem is one of the most important issues in transportation. Among VRP problems, the competitive VRP is more important because there is a tough competition between distributors and retailers. In this study we introduced new method for VRP in competitive environment. In these methods Two-Person Nonzero Sum games are defined to choose equilibrium solution. Therefore, revenue giv...

The Nash Solution to the Bargaining Problem

Policy formation is a process of political interaction among individuals and groups. While some participants in the political process may share similar, or even identical interests, the political preferences of other participants diverge so that conflicts of interest among participating parties are unavoidable. Nevertheless, such conflicts are often resolved in the policy formulation process. T...

A Theory of Unstructured Bargaining using Distribution- Valued Solution Concepts

In experiments it is typically found that many joint utility outcomes arise in any given unstructured bargaining game. This suggests using a positive unstructured bargaining concept that maps a bargaining game to a probability distribution over outcomes rather than to a single outcome. We show how to “translate” Nash’s bargaining axioms to apply to such distributional bargaining concepts. We th...
